Handcrafted wooden sign process

How Custom Wooden Signs Are Made: From Lumber to Your Wall

Ever wondered what happens between clicking "order" on a personalized sign and the box arriving at your door? Here is an inside look at how our custom wooden signs go from raw lumber to your wall.

Step 1: Lumber selection

It starts with the wood. Our signs begin as solid pine, chosen for its workability, weight, and the way it takes stain. Each board is inspected: straight grain, minimal knots in the lettering area, no warping. Pine is a softwood, which makes it ideal for signs, light enough to hang easily, soft enough to cut cleanly, and affordable enough to keep custom pieces within reach.

Step 2: Cutting and prep

Boards are cut to size, in the case of our family name sign, 22 inches wide by 11 inches tall, then sanded smooth. Sanding matters more than most people realize: stain absorbs unevenly on rough wood, leaving blotches. A properly prepped board takes finish evenly across the whole surface.

Step 3: Staining the backdrop

The pine backdrop gets its warm golden stain, applied by hand and wiped to an even tone. Stain is not paint: it soaks into the wood and lets the grain show through, which is exactly the point. The golden tone warms the piece and suits everything from farmhouse to cabin interiors.

Step 4: The lettering

This is where your design comes in. The lettering is cut from birch, chosen for its fine, even grain that paints cleanly. Each letter is painted, and the paint is applied so the woodgrain texture still shows through, giving the text depth that flat printed letters cannot match. Your choices in our online designer, the name, the font from dozens of styles, the lettering color, the established date with lines, without lines, or name only, become the cutting and painting plan.

Step 5: Assembly and finishing

Lettering is mounted to the stained backdrop, and the piece gets its final finish: a protective topcoat, with outdoor-rated sealing on pieces made for exterior use. A hanger goes on the back, and the sign is ready to hang or lean on a shelf.

Step 6: Packing and shipping

Custom pieces cannot be replaced off a shelf, so packing is deliberate: rigid protection, corner guards, and a box sized to the piece. Then it ships to your door, ready to hang.

Why handmade matters

No two boards are identical, which means no two signs are identical. The grain in your sign's pine backdrop exists in exactly one piece of wood in the world. That is the difference between decor and a keepsake.
