How to Choose the Right Size Wall Sign

The number one regret in wall decor is size, and it almost always runs small. A sign that looked substantial online disappears on a real wall. Here is how to get sizing right the first time.

The two-thirds rule

Interior designers use a simple guideline: wall art should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture or architectural feature below it. A sign over a 6-foot sofa should be about 4 feet wide. Over a 5-foot mantel, aim for 40 inches. This single rule prevents the vast majority of sizing mistakes.

Measure with painter's tape

Before ordering anything, outline the sign's dimensions on your wall with painter's tape and live with it for a day. Walk past it, view it from the couch, check it in evening light. Sizing by room

Entryways. The sign is viewed up close, so 18 to 30 inches wide is the sweet spot. It should complement the console table or bench, not overwhelm a narrow hall.

Living rooms. Above a sofa or mantel, follow the two-thirds rule. On a large blank wall with no furniture, go bigger than you think, small pieces look lost on open walls.

Bedrooms. Above the headboard, match roughly the width of the bed's headboard. Keep it calm, this is a restful room.

Garages and man caves. These rooms have the largest uninterrupted walls in the house, and they swallow small signs whole. Go big here. A personalized man cave name sign should hold its own against tool chests and workbenches.

When in doubt
